A dramatic lash photo can sell you a look without telling you how much work it takes to create it. Before you add anything to your bag, decide what you want to change: definition, length, fullness, or the shape of the outer corner. Those are different shopping jobs.

Start with the finish you actually wear

If your everyday makeup is light, begin with definition rather than the fullest style on the page. Mascara works with your own lashes. A strip lash adds a separate band and lash shape. An extension service is a different commitment again, involving an appointment and maintenance rather than a product you simply buy online.

Read the shape, not only the name

Look at where the longest fibres sit. A style with extra length towards the outer edge creates a different visual balance from one that is longest in the centre. Compare straight-on product photos, not only an angled model picture. Terms such as wispy, natural and dramatic are brand descriptions rather than a shared measurement system.

Count the whole kit

A cheap strip-lash pack may need a separate adhesive, applicator or remover. Check what is included and follow the manufacturer's fitting, application and removal instructions. For mascara, decide whether your existing remover is suitable for the formula before choosing a waterproof option. The cheapest item is not always the cheapest complete routine.

Make eye-area safety part of the decision

The FDA advises keeping hands and eye-area tools clean, not sharing eye makeup, and checking lash-adhesive ingredients. Stop using a product that irritates your eyes; seek medical advice if irritation persists. Never use a product around the eyes unless it is intended for that area.

Your first-purchase checklist

Our lash department includes eye makeup and clearly labelled retailer collections. A listing is a starting point for comparison, not a guarantee that a product will suit every eye shape.
